chiao’s credentials and philosophy

Master's of social work (lsw) -clinical license 150.114085- pronouns (she/her/hers) - english, mandarin chinese, & taiwanese hokkien (Tâi-Gí) - individuals

I am passionate about supporting individuals through life’s challenges and seeing them live as their authentic selves. We are often socialized to look outwardly, whether it’s our family, friends, or general societal expectations in order to fit in and succeed. Therapy is an opportunity to intentionally look inward at yourself and help you find directions to live your life with your authentic self.

My experience includes working with diverse individuals in community settings, including young adults, older adults, and their caregivers, to deal with life transitions while navigating complex systems. I enjoy working with individuals dealing with stress, anxiety, and relationship issues. I also find it especially meaningful working with immigrants and first-generation individuals who are exploring their identity, belonging while navigating challenges of acculturation, studying abroad, and immigration.

Working with me, you can expect to reconnect with your strengths, wisdom, and insights, and to explore your external resources and possibilities.

My therapeutic approach is strengths based, trauma-informed, and collaborative.

Some of my intersecting identities are:

Taiwanese American - immigrant (I immigrated to the United States from Taiwan at age 24) - former new yorker – Chicago newbie - interracially married – foodie and birder- Buddhist - lgbtqia+ ally & advocate
